Yes. We organize trips to other Universities’ dances, the annual British Inter Varsity Folk Dance Festival (IVFDF) and other dance festivals in Europe and the UK. Every autumn we also organize a Freshers’ Weekend somewhere in Scotland to get to know our new members.

How often does the society meet?
We hold dancing lessons every week. For Step and Highland classes regular attendance is recommended so as not to lose track. However, for the Thursday evenings in Lutton Place, you can just drop in as often as you like.
-
Why is there a mailing list?
If you are joining New Scotland,we would also recommend that you sign up to our General Mailing List. You will then receive up to date information on class venues, ceilidhs, dances and other events. It is the best way to keep in touch with what is going on!

Do I need dancing shoes?
No. For step dance we recommend to wear hard soled shoes a small heel is handy, but not necessary. For our other classes, just wear whatever shoes you feel comfortable in, although high heels and steel-capped boots are not recommended. Ballet shoes can also be used for dancing and are cheaper than country dancing shoes.
-
Do I need a dancing partner?
No. Step and Highland are not danced in couples at all, and in the other classes we swap partners after each dance, so there’s no need to worry about coming on your own, as there will be plenty of people to dance with!

What do I get from being a member?

Subsidised travel to other societies’ dances and national dance festivals. The opportunity to go to dance festivals all over Europe. The chance to meet an amazing group of people!
