New Scotland holds classes in Ceilidh, Country, Highland and Step dancing for beginners, intermediates and experienced dancers. This semester’s classes will run from the 16th September until the 12th December 2024. All our classes will be held in Pleasance (EH8 9TJ). Please read our Code of Conduct before attending classes.

Your first class is always free so why not come and try!

Ceilidh/Country Dance Classes

Beginner Ceilidh and Country
Tuesdays 20:45-22:15, Quaker Studio (Pleasance)

Intermediate/Advanced Country
Tuesdays 19:00-20:30, Quaker Studio (Pleasance)

If you’ve never done ceilidh dancing, the most important thing to know is it is for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never danced before, have two left feet or even three! Everyone is welcome at a ceilidh and you’ll be astonished how hard it is not to end up dancing! In these classes we also teach country dancing which has lots of transferrable skills from ceilidh.

Highland Dance Classes

Beginner Highland
Thursdays 19:00-20:00, Ochil Room (Pleasance)

Intermediate Highland
Thursdays 20:15-21:15, Ochil Room (Pleasance)

Advanced Highland
Mondays 17:45-19:00, Ochil Room (Pleasance)

Highland dances are usually done solo and involve lots of jumping, sometimes over swords! There are also more ballet style dances. Our beginner class assumes no prior knowledge and you can join at any point in the year. The intermediate class goes over the harder dances slower than the advanced class so are good if you want a refresher. The advanced class covers lots of dances in a class but is accommodating for different amounts of experience.

Step Dance Classes

Beginner Step
Mondays 19:00-20:00, Torridon Room (Pleasance)

Returners/Advanced Step
Mondays 20:00-21:00, Torridon Room (Pleasance)

Scottish step-dancing is a traditional Scottish form of hard-shoe dancing which can be danced solo, or in a small ‘set’ where steps in slow (Strathspey) and quick (reel and jig) time are combined with simple dance patterns such as reels of three or four and ‘birrling’.
